Knowledge probably isn't your bottleneck

Knowing things makes me feel smart.

But learning can also be a trap, because knowing more things often isn't necessary to progress towards your life goals.

The moment you've learned enough to get from where you are now, to where you want to be, is the moment when knowledge is no longer bottlenecking your success.

Every cliché piece of life advice you've ever heard provides enough bite-sized wisdom to legitimately change your life:

  • Exercise regularly
  • Save your money
  • Upskill often

And yet we'll listen to a 2 hour podcast on the best time of day to slurp back our protein shake before we reach 6 months of consistent exercise.

The fear and hesitation that paralyze us when we imagine taking action towards our goals is conveniently misinterpreted as "I don't know how to".

It makes us feel smart to sink hours, days, weeks, months, and years into accumulating information. The value of the next tweet, blog post, or podcast we consume is irrelevant. We just like the feeling of novel information entering our brain and massaging our neurons.

Learning is useful for finding out which actions and routines are required to achieve your goal. After that point, it's probably a distraction.
